Google Maps: “Permanently Closed” to “Open” in 1 Step

WebFX, a company with nearly two decades of experience, has successfully navigated through two decades of search engine evolution, amassing a loyal client base along the way. Our growth has necessitated several relocations, a testament to our expansion and success. However, these changes have sometimes caused confusion, particularly in updating our online presence. Over the past few months, I addressed an issue involving our Google Maps and Google My Business listings, ensuring our updated location in Harrisburg was accurately reflected.

Google Maps: “Permanently Closed” to “Open” in 1 Step

Initially, we had two listings: one for our previous location on Lincoln Street in Carlisle and another for our current headquarters in Harrisburg. The issue was compounded by the fact that our old listing was marked as permanently closed, which was not the case. This incorrect information was likely to mislead potential clients searching for us in Carlisle.

The correct WebFX listing was not visible on Google due to the erroneous information, leading to frequent instances where individuals searching for “WebFX Carlisle” were directed to the outdated listing. Recognizing the urgency to rectify this, I embarked on a series of attempts to correct the issue.

Firstly, I attempted to contact the owner of the false listing, but this approach proved ineffective due to an inactive email address or lack thereof. Next, I utilized Google Mapmaker to suggest edits, which took several days but ultimately did not resolve the issue. My next step was to claim and verify the listing, which involved a postcard verification process. Despite my efforts, the problem persisted, prompting me to try again. This time, the verification code led me to the correct listing, but I mistakenly believed I had received the wrong postcard and requested another. The second postcard also directed me to the correct listing, leaving me without further options.

In a last-ditch effort, I turned to Google’s small business Twitter account, @GoogleSmallBiz, and received a prompt response that same day. The issue was resolved within minutes, providing a sense of relief and a clear path forward.
