In this tutorial, we will delve into creating a sophisticated 3D text design using Adobe Illustrator. To visualize the final outcome, please refer to the attached image below, which displays the full-scale version of our project.
We commence the process by inputting text. To do so, activate the Type Tool (T), click and drag a box on the artboard to define the text area, and type “DESIGN TEXT” across two lines. This will yield the desired shape. You may modify the text size by accessing the Character Panel (Window > Type > Character or press Ctrl/Cmd + T).
The font employed is Adelle Basic Bold, though you can opt for a similar style if preferred.
Next, we’ll convert the text into shapes for enhanced manipulation. Utilize the Selection Tool (V) to select the text, then navigate to Type > Create Outlines (Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + O).
Adjust the kerning (letter spacing) and leading (line spacing) to optimize the text’s fit. To do this, ungroup the text (Object > Ungroup or Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + G) to isolate individual letters. Adjust the spacing by dragging selected letters closer together.
To add color, select the text and fill it with the desired color. For a more detailed appearance, consider adding gradients to the text sides to create depth. This involves creating additional colors and applying them to the text paths.
Once the text is to your liking, you can transform it into 3D by grouping the letters (Object > Group or Ctrl/Cmd + G), then applying the 3D Extrude & Bevel effect (Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel). Adjust the 3D settings to achieve the desired perspective and depth.
To enhance the text’s visual appeal, consider adding shadows and gradients to create a more dynamic effect. This involves creating various shades of the base colors and applying them to the text paths, using the Gradient Tool (G) for more precise adjustments.
Finally, you can make the text faces more prominent by copying and pasting them in front with white fill, adjusting the blend mode to Overlay and the opacity to 30%.
This tutorial showcases how to create engaging 3D text with accurate shading using Illustrator alone, without the need for additional 3D-rendering software. The versatility of vector objects in Illustrator allows for easy resizing and integration into various Adobe and third-party software applications.
