Google unveiled a significant algorithm update in the late fall of 2011, and we have been closely examining its impact on our client sites as well as others. Several insights from this recent algorithm shift are deemed valuable enough to share, both with our clients and the wider online community.
1. For years, we have emphasized that SEO transcends mere link building and keyword targeting. SEO firms that solely promote these two practices (‘Receive 500 links monthly for $1000 in our Silver package’) are outdated and lagging behind. They are unlikely to achieve lasting results in competitive markets without risking manual penalties from Google. Today, one of our clients was offered ‘blog posts’ at just $.10 each, which the SEO company actually meant as low-quality forum links at $.10 each. I highlighted the risks associated with such tactics and explained the nuances of how algorithms assess links. When selecting an SEO firm, seek one that discusses a multitude of Google algorithm factors, as well as the user experience of your website. These aspects are intrinsically linked.
2. Freshness matters. Google has been moving towards a model where the timeliness of your content and updates play a crucial role in the value of your site. While the Freshness update may undergo further adjustments to mitigate its impact, Google will continue to favor sites that regularly update their content to remain relevant and ‘fresh’ for users. Many of our clients who have engaged us for content creation or are managing this aspect of their marketing in-house are experiencing notable improvements in competitive search rankings due to this change. We view this as a significant opportunity for smaller businesses, individuals, and startups to differentiate themselves—consistently posting high-quality content can help you stand out in a crowded market.
